      HINMAN, NY - MURPHY - GONYEA - VIEW                         3/29/06

I am seeking the location named
Hinman, NY.  It's not on any modern map of Northern New York, but it must have been around
Standish, either in Clinton or Franklin Counties.  My uncle, Charles Arthur
Murphy, died in 1950.  His obituary states that, after
his discharge from the Army after World War I, "he worked as a fire patrolman on the railroad at Hinman".  He and Miss Jennie A.
Gonyea, Malone, were married at Hinman, Jan. 20, 1920, by the Rev. Father View, pastor of the Catholic Church at
Standish.

They lived in Hinman for a time and then moved to Malone..."  The "railroad" must have been a branch of the D&H, which I am told,
serviced the mines in the Lyon Mountain area.  I would appreciate any additional info on Hinman, the railroad branch, or the Rev.
Father
View.

They had  8 children, one named Bertha who was killed around 1915.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Samuel Trembly was married to Catherine Britt on 3 June 1887 in St. John's church Keeseville.
Our index card specifies that they were married earlier by a minister.  The witnesses were Edward Britt and Mrs. Esther Trombly.
The new Keeseville book will be published by the society in the near future.

DEMARSE-MARTIN HOUSE

In checking out the Society's new web page, I noticed your query on Peter Martin and his family.
I happened to live in the former Demarse Martin house on Hallock Hill Road [actually, our mailing address is now Martin Road!]

When we had lived here only a few years, one summer a family from [CT?] stopped by and I understood that the woman in the
group was a daughter or granddaughter of Demarse.  She walked all through the house describing her memories of it from
childhood. We gave her a couple of large framed portraits of people which we assumed were Martin ancestors.  They had been
left in the attic [I think we are the 3rd owners after the Martins]  This may have been about 1979 or so--can't remember exactly.
Perhaps you know who this lady is--sorry not to be more helpful.

Have you seen Allan Everest's book of Pioneer Homes of Clinton County?  Roger Bezio and Demarse Martin's houses are both in
it.  Peter's house is also still standing mid way between them and has a beautiful view.  Easy to see why he settled there!

    Best regards,   Nancy Smith
